On May 15, 1861, at the beginning of the American Civil War, the following list of persons able to provide military duty was submitted to the Town Clerk by the Assessors of Pepperell.

The following according to our best information and belief is a list of persons able to do military duty as made out by us the Subscribers Assessors of Pepperell
May 15, 1861"
