Electronic Checks / Bill Pay
Electronic Checks / Electronic Bill Pay
Electronic Payment to the Tax Collector’s office for personal property, real estate, and/or motor vehicle excise taxes is allowed via your banking institution, however there are some important points you need to understand, so we may properly apply your payment to the correct bill.
The primary identifier of your tax bill is the Bill Number, and it is different for each bill and may be different for each fiscal year. If you have multiple bills, you will have multiple bill numbers. The Bill Number is clearly shown on your tax bill. Each Bill Number should be indicated on each bill payment.
Account numbers, property parcel IDs, license plate numbers, etc., while helpful, are not the primary identifiers of your tax bill. Not having the Bill Number referenced with your payment will slow down or prevent applying the payment to your bill.
Understanding Electronic Checks / Electronic Bill Pay
By whatever name your banking institution calls it, the ability for you to pay your bills electronically without having to personally write and mail checks is a time and money-saving feature (e.g., no postage). While some companies and organizations allow “electronic deposit” of electronic payments, a majority do not. This means for most electronic payments, your banking institution creates and mails paper checks. For Town of Pepperell tax bills we do not receive electronic bill payments electronically, so banks print and mail us paper checks. Therefore, it can take up to five (5) or more business days before we receive your payment in Town Hall.
What Information is Required?
Whenever paying electronically we need your Bill Number. Because the Bill Number is unique to each bill each year, setting up and saving a “Pay To” account, based on a Bill Number, is pointless - as you will end up having many “Pay To” accounts for the Town of Pepperell, one for each Bill Number. Remember, we may not be able to apply your payment without a Bill Number.
When paying your bill with the Electronic Check / Electronic Bill Pay system, please send your payment directly to:
Town of Pepperell
1 Main St.
Pepperell, MA 01463-1650
The Lockbox payment system in Reading cannot process a payment without a hard copy of your bill. When the Lockbox receives your electronic payment without a bill they forward the payment to our office; and the delay can make your payment late, as a result interest and/or penalties will be added to your bill.
REMINDER: Property owners may also pay their tax bill(s) via the Online Payment link on the Town's website. https://town.pepperell.ma.us/135/Online-Payments
