MassDOT Awards Pepperell Complete Streets $400K Grant

Rotary Complete Sts

The purpose of this project is to improve the rotary at Main Street (Rt. 113), and Hollis Street/River Road (Rt. 111) by refining circulation, traffic flow, and make safety and accessibility improvements for pedestrians.  The rotary has been a concern to town officials and the community in regards to current and future traffic flow and safety.  The Town also recognizes the rotary as a gateway to many destinations in Pepperell, and as such would like to see improvements.  Currently, the rotary design encourages high speeds and limited yielding to other vehicles and pedestrians.  The crosswalks also have poor visibility and are not ADA compliant, resulting in significant safety concerns for pedestrians.

The overall design will integrate safe and efficient vehicle and pedestrian use and will result in better traffic flow, reduction of traffic speeds, and safety for pedestrians.  The proposed design will slow vehicles down as they enter the rotary and the crosswalk improvements, including the refuge islands, will allow pedestrians to stop and cross safely, only having to focus on one direction of traffic at a time.  Overall, the proposed project for the rotary would be a significant improvement to the Town and allow for residents of all ages to be more active, while minimizing the concern for pedestrian and vehicular safety.
